That dreaded moment is finally here. You have been making an effort to keep your aligners in safe places but leaving it outside of its case this one time has proved to be a mistake. You try not to panic, but if you don’t resolve the issue as soon as possible, you could backtrack and prolong the length of your Invisalign treatment. However, it isn’t the end of the world. Continue reading to learn about the different steps you should take if you have lost you aligner and it is nowhere to be found.

What Do You Do First?

The first thing you should do is take another look around to see if you can find it. Aligners are clear and can be easy to misplace. Look close by and try to retrace your steps If you can. If you know that you have done everything that you can and still cannot find it, then you should give your dental a call. This way, you can get the guidance you need.

You may feel tempted to just move on to your next set of aligners, but this isn’t a very good idea. Your dentist may recommend this, but only if you were near the end of the previous phase of your treatment. Otherwise, it is probably too soon. Invisalign is designed to move your teeth gradually to new locations with minuscule movements over time. If you put your next set of aligners in too early, you could be interfering with your treatment plan.

If you only just began wearing the aligner trays that you lost, you may be asked to go back to your previous ones until a new set can arrive. The best thing to do when you lose your aligners is be transparent with your dentist. Remember that you are on the same team.

How to Avoid Losing Your Aligners

Now you know how stressful it can be when you lose them, so you are probably ready to commit to some steps to prevent it from happening again in the future:

  • Have a dedicated place, preferably a case, where you can keep your aligners when you take them out to eat, drink, and clean your teeth.
  • Always wear your aligners. You shouldn’t be removing them unless it is necessary to eat, drink, or clean your teeth.
  • Never place your trays on a plate, tray, or napkin. They are more likely to be thrown away.

Accidents happen sometimes. If this happens to you, remain calm and give your dentist a call. You’ll be back on track towards a straighter smile in no time!
