Why Choose Texas Dentistry for IV Sedation?

How Does IV Sedation Work?

IV sedation is a form of sedation dentistry we offer to patients with moderate to severe dental fear or anxiety. It can also be used during more extensive treatments if you want to feel relaxed and comfortable no matter what. Administered intravenously, IV sedation can be easily controlled, allowing us to adjust the levels of your sedation. This form of sedation works almost instantly, and while it’s completely normal for you to doze off during the procedure, you’ll still be responsive to touch and sound. Because IV sedation requires extra skill and training, many dentists don’t offer it as an option. However, we want to ensure that all of our patients can enjoy anxiety-free dentistry, no matter their level of dental fear.

Are You a Candidate for IV Sedation?

The best way to know if you’re a candidate for this service is to visit our office. One of our experienced dentists will meet with you for a consultation to discuss your fear, anxiety, or why IV sedation may be right for you. After, you can enjoy your dental care in comfort! Candidates for this service will typically have moderate to severe dental anxiety or troubles with keeping still for longer periods of time. IV sedation can also help those with a sensitive gag reflex have a more enjoyable dental experience.

What to Expect Before and After IV Sedation

If you choose IV sedation, we will recommend that you fast at least 8 hours before your procedure. Because of this instruction, many patients prefer to book their appointments in the morning so they won’t have to dramatically alter their diet. You should plan to have someone take you to and from our office because you’ll be slightly groggy afterward. We recommend a friend or family member over a taxi or Uber because having a familiar face in the waiting room can also help more anxious patients. The effects of IV sedation will eventually wear off after a few hours, and you can go about the rest of your day as you normally would, depending on the type of treatment you received.
