Are you correctly using your dental insurance coverage? You pay for it every month and you know that it’s important, but you could be wasting thousands of dollars in benefits without even knowing it! However, if you maximize your dental insurance benefits, then you can save money while keeping your smile happy and healthy. Here are five essential tips for making the most out of your dental insurance.

1.) Get Two Checkups Every Year

Now that the year is almost over, have you gotten your second dental checkup and cleaning yet? Most dental insurance policies cover two dental checkups per year at 90-100% coverage. If you don’t take full advantage of these routine visits, you’re wasting benefits that you’re already paying for! Plus, dental checkups and cleanings are one of the most effective ways to lower the cost of keeping your smile healthy.

2.) Understand Your Coverage

Every policy is unique, but most follow the same general guidelines when it comes to how much of each type of treatment they cover:

  • Preventive care like checkups, cleanings, screenings, and diagnostics are often covered by 90-100%
  • Basic treatments including fillings and dental bonding typically receive 60-80% coverage
  • Major procedures such as dental crowns and tooth extractions are usually only covered at 50% or less

3.) Check Your Deductible

Your deductible is the set amount that you need to pay out-of-pocket for your own dental care before your dental insurance coverage kicks in. This number resets at the beginning of your coverage period, which is usually in January. If you’ve already paid for some of your deductible, it’s best to get as much treatment as you can now before it resets next year. Otherwise, you’ll end up paying more than you have to.

4.) Use Your Annual Maximum

Once you’ve hit your deductible, your insurance will cover your treatments up until a set amount. This limit is called your annual maximum, and it’s one of the most important parts of your dental insurance. If you’ve met your deductible and haven’t reached your annual maximum, you should get as much of your needed dental work done before the end of the year. Like with your deductible, your annual maximum won’t roll over into the following year, so take advantage of it so it doesn’t go to waste.

5.) Talk to Your Dentist

These tips only scratch the surface of using and understanding your dental insurance, so it’s natural to have more questions. That’s why you should talk to your dentist directly about the best ways you can use your dental insurance in your unique situation. They will help you navigate the specifics of your benefits and ensure your smile stays healthy while you save money.
