6 Ways to Ease New Aligner Discomfort

Beauty is pain, and it’s especially true when it comes to Invisalign treatment. Although you’re not supposed to experience unbearable pain while wearing the clear aligners, you can expect to have some discomfort throughout the process. It’s a normal part of any orthodontic treatment! After all, your teeth are being forcibly moved into more ideal positions. If your mouth is feeling tender, you might be looking for some ways to get relief. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Read on to learn how you can relieve Invisalign discomfort.

Apply Cold Compresses

A cold compress is an excellent way to soothe swollen and sore tissues in your mouth. You can apply an ice pack against your face to reduce inflammation and ease the pain you experience during Invisalign treatment. If necessary, you can even use the cold compress to numb your gums a bit before slipping your new aligners into your mouth.

Take Pain Medication

Are you extremely sensitive to the pain and discomfort that comes with the clear aligners? Take over-the-counter pain medication! You don’t need a large dose – the amount you usually take for a headache will do just fine. For effective results, take a painkiller about an hour before advancing to the next set of trays. That way, you can give the medication enough time to kick in. It’s worth noting that you should not take pain medication every time you change the trays. You don’t want to start a bad habit!

Rinse with Warm Salt Water

One natural but effective pain relief trick is to rinse your mouth with warm saltwater. It helps reduce inflammation and soothe irritated oral tissues. To use this approach, mix half a teaspoon of table salt in a glass of warm water. Take a sip, gently rinse your sore gums, and spit the water out. You can repeat until the water is gone or as needed.

Use Orthodontic Wax

If your Invisalign plan includes orthodontic buttons or attachments, they can scratch your lips or cheeks while you eat. Your mouth will eventually get used to these accessories, but in the meantime, you may find the pain uncomfortable. Luckily, some orthodontic wax can help. Roll a tiny ball of wax and mold it to cover the irritating attachment during mealtimes. Your mouth will get a much-needed break with a smoother surface!

Switch to New Aligners Before Bed

Since you’ll feel the most discomfort within the first few hours of wearing your new aligners, it’s best to switch them right before bedtime. That way, you can be asleep during the first most sensitive hours when your teeth go through the most dramatic changes.

Use Invisalign Chewies

Invisalign chewies are soft, spongy chewing devices that help your new aligners fit more snugly to your teeth. They can help you seat the trays securely, eliminating airspaces and helping your teeth move faster to fit the new aligner. Chewies can be used anytime you put your trays back in, like after brushing your teeth or eating a snack.

If your Invisalign discomfort is severe or getting worse, visit your dentist to confirm that the pain isn’t being caused by something serious. They’ll provide you with personalized tips to help you stay comfortable while getting the most out of your treatment plan!
